Shiro Ishii
1892-1959 A military officer from the Taisho to early Showa eras.
Born June 25, 1892. Son-in-law of Torasaburo Araki. Became an army surgeon in 1921. Later became an instructor at the Army Medical School and advocated research into germ warfare. After serving as head of the Epidemic Prevention Department of the Kwantung Army, he became head of the Epidemic Prevention and Water Supply Department (Unit 731) of the Kwantung Army in 1940, where he led the development of germ weapons. He was defeated at the age of lieutenant general. He was held responsible for live animal experiments at the Tokyo Trials, but was not prosecuted. Died October 9, 1959. Age 67. Born in Chiba Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto Imperial University.

明治25年6月25日生まれ。荒木寅三郎の娘婿。大正10年陸軍軍医。のち陸軍軍医学校教官となって細菌戦争の研究を提唱。関東軍防疫部長をへて,昭和15年関東軍防疫給水部(第七三一部隊)部長となり,細菌兵器の開発を主導。中将で敗戦。東京裁判で生体実験などの責任を追及されたが,訴追をまぬかれた。昭和34年10月9日死去。67歳。千葉県出身。京都帝大卒。
