Collection of young vegetables - Wakanashu

Collection of young vegetables - Wakanashu

Shimazaki Toson's first collection of poems. Published by Shunyodo in 1897 (Meiji 30). Contains 51 poems and prologues that were mainly published in Bungakukai during Toson's time at Sendai. Based on a 7-5 rhythm, the poems are written in a fixed literary style and use a lot of elegant Yamato kotoba (Japanese-style Japanese dialect), and sing of the sorrows and joys of Toson's youth, when he finally encounters "spring" after repeated heartbreak and wandering. As shown in the long poem "Kusamakura," the hymns are not necessarily loud, and even as lyric poems, they have a noticeable narrative character. However, it is a representative collection of Meiji romanticism, singing of the depressed ego and a passionate desire for liberation. Particularly famous are the poems about six women, including "Oefu," as well as "Song of the Autumn Wind," "Sound of the Sea," "First Love," and "White Wall."
