A warship of the Edo Shogunate. Construction began at the Hop Smit shipyard in the Netherlands in 1856 at the Shogunate's request, and it was launched in March 1857, arriving in Nagasaki in September of the same year (August 1857) with naval instructors including Van Cattendiecke. Its original name was Japan. It was a schooner corvette with a length of 49 meters, three masts, and a 100 horsepower steam engine, with a displacement of 625 tons, a speed of 6 knots, and 12 guns. It was originally used as a training ship for the Shogunate Navy in Nagasaki, and then in Edo, and in 1860 (Man'en 1), it served as an escort ship for the Powhatan, a welcoming ship for the Japanese envoys to the United States, with Kimura Yoshitake (Kaishu), Katsu Kaishu, and American John Mercer Brooke (1826-1906) on board. It departed Uraga on February 10 of that year (the 19th day of the New Year on the lunar calendar), becoming the first Japanese warship to cross the Pacific Ocean, arriving in San Francisco on March 17 (February 25). After witnessing the arrival of the envoys and their departure for Panama, it returned to Uraga via Honolulu on June 23 (May 5). Later, he served on patrol in Kanagawa, was dispatched to Tsushima, and was involved in the development of Ogasawara Islands. In 1868 (Meiji 1), he was removed from service and joined the fleet of Enomoto Takeaki, which attempted to escape from off the coast of Shinagawa to Hakodate, but due to bad weather, he stopped at Shimoda and then Shimizu, where he was captured by the government forces. Later, he became a transport ship for the Hokkaido Development Commission, and was scrapped in 1872.
