Arctic cultural area

The cultural domains of the Eskimos and Aleuts are classified into nine categories based on the distribution of cultural elements such as the distribution of subsistence activities and cultural development. The tundra region of the far north stretches from the Aleut Islands and the Bering Strait in the west to Labrador in northeastern Canada and Greenland. It is characterized by short, cool summers and long, harsh winters, permafrost is widespread, and almost no trees grow there.
