…However, after the Norman Conquest in 1066, the compilation of dictionaries of this kind declined with the decline of English as the national language, and only a few fragmentary thesauruses were produced. One of these, that of John Garland (c. 1202-52), a famous theologian, grammarian, and alchemist, is notable for being the first English-language document written by an Englishman to use the Latin word dictionaryarius (English dictionary), but it includes only a few English equivalents. However, by the end of the 14th century, with the rise of national consciousness, English regained its status as the national language, and several Romance-English dictionaries appeared during the 15th century. …
