Ensete (English spelling) Abyssinian banana

Japanese: エンセテ（英語表記）Abyssinian banana

A plant of the Musaceae family cultivated in Ethiopia and East Africa (illustration). The starch stored in the pseudostem (the part of the leaf stalk that overlaps to form a stem) and rhizomes is edible. The overall shape is similar to that of a banana or a banana, but the pseudostem is thick and large ones can reach a diameter of 50 cm at the base and a height of over 3 m. The leaves are broad and produce inflorescences between them. Like bananas, there are tiers of female flowers at the base and male flowers at the tip. However, unlike bananas and bananas, the plant does not produce sprouts and dies once it has flowered and fruited.

エチオピアや東アフリカで栽培されるバショウ科の植物（イラスト）。偽茎(葉柄が巻き重なって茎のようになった部分)や根茎にためられたデンプンを食用にする。　全形はバショウやバナナに似ているが，偽茎は太く，大きなものでは基部の直径50cm，高さ3m以上になる。葉は闊大でその間から，花序を出す。基部には雌花群が，先端部には雄花群が段をなしてつくこともバナナに同じである。ただバナナやバショウのように芽苗をつくらないため，開花結実した個体は枯死する。
