A plant of the Musaceae family cultivated in Ethiopia and East Africa (illustration). The starch stored in the pseudostem (the part of the leaf stalk that overlaps to form a stem) and rhizomes is edible. The overall shape is similar to that of a banana or a banana, but the pseudostem is thick and large ones can reach a diameter of 50 cm at the base and a height of over 3 m. The leaves are broad and produce inflorescences between them. Like bananas, there are tiers of female flowers at the base and male flowers at the tip. However, unlike bananas and bananas, the plant does not produce sprouts and dies once it has flowered and fruited. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
