In the West, blindness was often considered a divine punishment meted out to those who saw something they were not allowed to see or who broke a vow. Greek myths and legends include the story of Aipytos, an Arcadian hero who entered the all-official sanctuary of Poseidon, and Daphnis, who broke his vow to a nymph not to fall in love with another maiden, being rendered blind. These myths and legends teach us that seeing does not necessarily lead to knowing, but rather to arrogance and ignorance, which results in punishment.

　西洋では，盲目になることは，通常は見ることを許されぬものを見た人や誓いを破った人に下される神罰と考えることが多かった。ギリシアの神話や伝説には，いっさいの立入りが許されないポセイドンの聖域に侵入したアルカディアの英雄アイピュトスAipytos，ほかの乙女とは恋をしないというニンフとの誓いを破ったダフニス等が盲目とされる話がある。これらの神話や伝説は，見ることが必ずしも知ることにつながらず，かえって傲慢や無知におちいり，罰を受ける結果になることを教えている。…
