South Hamgyong Province - Environmental

A province in the south of Northeast Korea. It covers an area of approximately 18,000 square kilometers. It has two administrative divisions (Hamhung and Sinpo) and 16 counties. The province is located in Hamhung. Mountains make up 80% of the province's area, with plains along the east coast of North Korea (the Sea of Japan side). The Mateonryeong Mountain Range runs from northeast to west on the border with Ryanggang Province in the north, and the Rangnim Mountain Range runs from north to south in the west of the province. The climate has an average annual temperature of 10°C and an annual precipitation of around 1,000 mm. The Namdaecheon and Seongcheon rivers flow into the Sea of Japan.

The country is rich in underground resources, and the polymetallic ores of the Matianling Mountains are world-famous producers of magnesite and lead-zinc ores. In addition, the Mandeok Mine in Hyocheon (iron sulfide, copper), iron ore in Iwon, and the Geisui Mine in Daeheung (tungsten) are large mines with both quality and quantity. There are also three hydroelectric power plants on the Chosin River, Bujeon River, and Hyocheon River, with a total generating capacity of 1.17 million kilowatts. Thanks to its favorable location, the Hamhung area is home to the Hungnam Chemical Fertilizer Plant, the 2.8 Vinalon Plant, the Ryuseong Machinery Plant, and the Hongung Chemical Machinery Plant, and shipyards in Seoho and Sinpo City. Light industry is carried out at the Hamhung Silk Mill, the Hamhung Woolen Spinning Mill, and the Flax Factory using agricultural and marine products produced in the province, while fish are manufactured at the Sinpo Cannery.

The fishing industry involves both deep-sea and open-sea fishing, with the fishing bases of Chaho, Sinpo, Hongwon and Seoho accounting for 50% of the nation's total catch. Agriculture involves rice cultivation in the Hamhung and Yeongheung plains, as well as corn, soybeans, wheat and industrial crops such as flax, hemp and hops, which are cultivated in the highland areas of Chosin, Daeheung, Deokseong and Hyocheon. Korea is also the number one producer of fruit, producing apples, peaches, apricots and pears, with apples accounting for the majority of the production, with Bucheong, Deokseong, Sinchang and Sinpo being the main producing areas.
