Lemaître, (François-Élie-) Jules
[Born] April 27, 1853. Loaret, Bennucy
[Died] August 5, 1914. Loaret, Travers French critic. After receiving a strict religious education at the seminary in Orléans, he studied at the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). He wrote theater reviews for the newspaper Journal des Débats and the magazine Les Études du Monde, and is considered a representative of impressionistic criticism, showing his broad education and flexible and delicate sensibility. He published a collection of essays called Les Contemporains (8 volumes, 1885-1918), Impressions de théâtre (Impressions of the Theatre) (11 volumes, 1888-1920), and the psychological comedy Le Pardon (1895). During the Dreyfus Affair, he led the movement calling for a referendum, and advocated nationalism and royalism. He was a member of the Academie Française (95).

Died January 26, 1876. French actor in Paris. After working at the Conservatoire and the Odéon, he made his big break in melodramas at the Boulevard Theater, and then gained fame for his performances in Othello, Hamlet, Dumas's Keen (1836), and Hugo's Rue Bras (1838). His acting, skillfully combining calculation and imagination, was passionate yet sensitive, and he was considered a representative of French Romantic theater.
