After receiving a strict religious education at the seminary in Orléans, he studied at the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). He wrote theater reviews for the newspaper Journal des Débats and the magazine Les Études du Monde, and is considered a representative of impressionistic criticism, showing his broad education and flexible and delicate sensibility. He published a collection of essays called Les Contemporains (8 volumes, 1885-1918), Impressions de théâtre (Impressions of the Theatre) (11 volumes, 1888-1920), and the psychological comedy Le Pardon (1895).
