Japanese: ヒツジバエ(羊蠅) - ヒツジバエ（英語表記）sheep botfly

An insect of the Diptera family, Ophididae. The larvae parasitize the nasal cavities, frontal sinuses, and maxillary sinuses of goats and sheep. The adult is slightly smaller than a honeybee. The body is covered with small dots. Female adults emerge from early summer to autumn, and while flying around the heads of goats and sheep, lay larvae in the nostrils along with mucus. The larvae mature over the next 8 to 10 months until the following spring, and emerge from the nostrils when the sheep sneezes and pupate within a few hours. The pupa period lasts 3 to 6 weeks, and the emerged adult has a degenerated mouth and can survive for about a month without food.

双翅目ヒツジバエ科の昆虫。幼虫がヤギやヒツジの鼻腔(孔)や前頭洞，上顎（じようがく）洞などに寄生する。成虫はミツバチよりもやや小型。体は小さな点刻で覆われている。雌成虫は初夏から秋にかけて発生し，ヤギやヒツジの頭のまわりを飛びながら粘液とともに鼻孔に幼虫を産みつける。幼虫は次の春までの8～10ヵ月間に成熟し，ヒツジのくしゃみとともに鼻孔から脱出して数時間以内に蛹化（ようか）する。さなぎの期間は3～6週，羽化した成虫は口が退化し食物をとらないで約1ヵ月間生存する。
