Hemoglobin is composed of heme and two types of globin, each of which has two polypeptide chains. Of these, a decrease in the production of the alpha chain is called alpha thalassemia and is caused by a defect in the alpha chain gene. A defect in all four of the four alpha chain genes completely suppresses the production of the alpha chain, causing fetal hydrops and premature birth. …
