Ohira Motoori

Japanese:
Ohira Motoori
Year of death: Tempo 4.9.11 (1833.10.23)
Year of birth: 17th February 1756 (1756.3.17)
A scholar of Japanese classics in the mid-to-late Edo period. His maiden name was Inakake. His childhood name was Tsunematsu, later Shigeho, Shigeho, and Ohira. He was commonly known as Juzo, Juta, and Jusuke. He was the son of Inakake Munetaka, a tofu merchant from Matsusaka, Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). He was adopted by Motoori Norinaga, and after inheriting the family name, he was called Motoori Sanshiemon and Fujigakinai no Oji. He became Norinaga's disciple at the age of 13, and thereafter served him closely, accompanying him on his travels. In 1799 (Kansei 11), at the age of 44, he was adopted by Norinaga, and after Norinaga's death, he succeeded the Motoori family in place of Motoori Harutani, who suffered from eye disease. He served Tokugawa Harutaka, the lord of the Kishu (Wakayama) domain, and in 1808 (Bunka 5), he was ordered to select the "Kii Zoku Fudoki," and in 1809, he left Matsusaka and moved to Wakayama with his wife and children. He lectured to feudal lords and, at the request of his students, traveled to Ise, Matsuzaka, and Kyoto to teach. He had over 1,000 students. However, he did not achieve any outstanding academic results. As Kyokutei Bakin described him as "a man of good character" (Kyouryōmanroku), he unified the Motoori school with his gentle and sincere personality. Ohira lost his eldest, second, and third sons in succession, and adopted Hamada Kamajirō, the husband of his third daughter Fujiko, as his successor under the name Motoori Uchito.
