Rubā`i is the plural of the Persian rubā`i (quatrain), meaning "collection of quatrains." It is a purely Persian form of poetry in which the first, second, and fourth rhymes are rhymed, or sometimes the third rhyme is rhymed. It is a form of poetry that is completed in four lines and has been used extensively since the first half of the 10th century and by many famous Persian poets. In particular, in the early period it was used to express mystical ideas, and Omar Khayyam's Ruba`i is the most famous of these.
