Let S be a surface and P be a point on it. Consider all planes that contain the normal to S at P (the perpendicular line erected to S at P), and give the curvature (≧0) of the curve that is the cut of S by these planes a positive or negative sign depending on whether the curve is concave or convex in the direction of the normal. In this case, if the sum of these maximum and minimum values is 0, then the mean curvature of S at P is said to be 0.
