All spectroscopic techniques, except those that use a prism as a dispersive element, use the interference of light. For example, diffraction grating spectroscopy uses the diffraction effect of light caused by numerous slits and the interference between the diffracted light, and as a result, the diffraction effect plays a role in dispersing the spectrum geometrically over a wide range. In this sense, it can be said that interferometry is a technique in which the principles of spectroscopy can be explained solely by the interference effect of light. Broadly speaking, there are those that use a multi-beam interferometer and those that use a two-beam interferometer, and both are excellent in that they can achieve high wavelength resolution and have good light utilization efficiency.

プリズムを分散素子として用いるものを除くすべての分光手法は光の干渉を利用している。例えば回折格子による分光法は多数の細隙（さいげき）による光の回折効果と回折した光の間の干渉を用いており，結果的には回折効果がスペクトルを幾何学的に広範囲に分散させる役割を果たしている。この意味から，干渉分光法とは光の干渉効果のみで分光の原理が説明できる手法であるといってよい。大きく分けて多光束干渉計を用いるものと2光束干渉計を用いるものとがあり，両者とも高い波長分解が得られるうえに光の利用率がよい点で優れる。
