A mammal of the Mustelidae family in the carnivorous order, with a long, slender body and short limbs, and adept at hiding in mouse burrows. Usually, it refers to the Japanese weasel Mustela itatsi (illustration) and the Siberian weasel M. sibirica (English name: Siberian weasel). The two species mentioned above are sometimes considered to be the same species, and the Japanese weasel has been introduced to Hokkaido and Sakhalin in addition to its original distribution in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Iki.
