German philosopher. Professor at the University of Zurich from 1877 until his death. He was a thorough positivist and, together with the Austrian physicist and philosopher Mach, is known as the founder of empirical criticism, and had a great influence on the later development of logical positivism. His major work is the two-volume Critique of Pure Experience (1888-1890). According to him, the task of philosophy is to remove all metaphysical concepts, return to pure experience, and recover the concept of the natural world by describing it according to the principle of least power. He attempted to symbolize the entire range of human experience through mathematical operations, but his ideas drew fierce criticism from the materialist camp.
