Ruth; Book of Ruth

Ruth; Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth is part of the third part of the Old Testament, known as the "Writings." In the Hebrew Scriptures, the Book of Ruth, along with the Odes of Solomon, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and the Book of Esther, form a set of five scrolls (megilous) that were to be read at Jewish festivals. The Book of Ruth is the scroll that is read at Pentecost, the 50th day after Passover.
The Book of Ruth takes its name from its main character, a Moabite woman who married the son of a Judahite couple in Moab. After her husband's death, Ruth chose to move to Judah with her mother-in-law Naomi rather than remain in her native country. She later married her former husband's wealthy relative Boaz and bore Obed, who, according to a passage towards the end of the book, was David's grandfather. This attempt to establish Ruth as an ancestor of David was probably added in the late 5th or 4th century BC. The author wrote the story with the aim of correcting the chosen people principle that clearly characterized Judaism after the Babylonian captivity and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem (516 BC). The editor who added the descent of David (4:17-22) took this a step further by making David the great-grandson of a Gentile woman.
