A monk of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Shoichi school, during the Kamakura period. The founder of the Ryogin school. His given names were Gengo and Fumonbo. He was from Shinano (Nagano prefecture), and first studied under Jakuen at Shoen-ji temple in Echigo (Niigata prefecture). At the age of 19, he studied under Shaku En'eicho (1165-1247) at Choraku-ji temple in Joshu (Gunma prefecture), and went to Kyoto to accompany Enni and receive the dharma succession. He then traveled to Song China, where he accompanies Dankyo Myorin (1201-1261) and others, and returned to Japan after 12 years in Song China. In 1281 (4th year of the Koan era), he became the third abbot of Tofuku-ji temple. Emperor Kameyama donated his villa, Zenrinji-dono in Higashiyama, to the public as a Zen temple, which later became Nanzen-ji Temple. This marked the beginning of a closer relationship between Zen Buddhism and the imperial court, and became the basis for the development of Zen Buddhism. He passed away on December 12, 1236.
