Gaius Lucilius

An ancient Roman poet and the founder of satirical poetry (satura). He was highly educated and formed close friendships with Scipio the Younger and his friends. In his 30 books of satire, he portrayed the human world as it really is, freely using ridicule, warnings, and scoldings, and mercilessly exposing wrongdoings by name. His themes are extremely diverse, including literary debates, political commentary, social criticism, philosophical discussions, theories on life, travelogues, and bestiary stories.

古代ローマの詩人。風刺詩（サトゥラ）の創始者。最高の教養を備え、小スキピオおよびその友人たちと親交を結んだ。『風刺詩』30巻で人の世をありのままに描き、嘲笑(ちょうしょう)、警告、叱責(しっせき)を自由に駆使し、悪事を容赦なく名指しで暴露した。テーマは文学論争、政治戯評、社会批判、哲学談義、人生論、旅行記、動物寓話(ぐうわ)など多彩を極める。
