American female science fiction writer. Born in Berkeley, California. Her father is the cultural anthropologist A.L. Kroeber, and her mother, Theodora Kroeber, is a writer and author of Ishi: The Last Wild Indian of North America. She studied Italian and French Renaissance literature at both Radcliffe and Columbia universities. Her activities are wide-ranging, beginning with her debut work, The World of Rocannon (1966), a series of space chronicles such as The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), the fantasy Earthsea trilogy (1968, 1971, 1972) with the Wizard of Earthsea as the protagonist, the utopian novel The Dispossessed (1974), and Malafrena (1979), which uses the framework of a historical novel.

アメリカの女流SF作家。カリフォルニア州バークリー生れ。父は文化人類学者A.L.クローバー，母セオドーラTheodora Kroeberは作家で《イシ――北米最後の野生インディアン》の著者。ラドクリフ，コロンビアの両大学で，ルネサンス期のイタリア文学とフランス文学を専攻。処女作《ロカノンの世界》(1966)に始まり，《闇の左手》(1969)に代表される一連の宇宙年代記物，アースシーの魔法使いを主人公とするファンタジー《ゲド戦記》三部作(1968,71,72)，ユートピア小説《所有せざる人々》(1974)，歴史小説の枠組みを利用した《マラフレナ》(1979)など，活動領域は広い。
