A type of bar. It is a bar-shaped steel material made by rolling steel ingots or billets. It is the second most produced after thick and medium plates, and there are far more manufacturers than other types. The market price of this steel, which is the main size with a diameter of 19 mm, is used as an indicator of the steel market. Depending on the shape of the cut surface, it is divided into round bars, square bars, hexagonal bars, octagonal bars, flat bars, semicircular bars, etc., and special shapes include deformed bars. By size, bars with a diameter of 100 mm or more are classified as large bars, bars with a diameter of 50 to 100 mm are classified as medium bars, and bars with a diameter of 50 mm or less are classified as small bars. More than 90% are small bars, and the majority are used for construction, followed by machinery and shipbuilding.

条鋼の一種。鋼塊あるいは鋼片を圧延してつくる棒状の鋼材で，厚中板に次いで生産量が多く，メーカーも他品種に比べ圧倒的に多い。中心サイズである直径 19mmの本鋼の市中価格は，鋼材市況の指標とされている。切断面の形状により，丸鋼，角鋼，六角鋼，八角鋼，平鋼，半円鋼などに分れ，特殊形状のものに異形棒鋼がある。サイズ別に，径 100mm以上を大型棒鋼，50～100mmを中型棒鋼，50mm以下を小型棒鋼と区分している。 90%以上が小型棒鋼で，建築用が大半を占め，機械，造船用がこれに次いでいる。
