A mirror-like smooth and shiny fault surface formed when rocks on both sides of a fault rub against each other and are polished by repeated fault movement. It can be observed on the surface of fault breccia and inside fault gouge. Mirror surfaces often have scratches called striations that are parallel to the direction of fault movement.
