A perennial plant of the lily family that grows on rocky areas in high mountains (illustration). It is often cultivated as a mountain plant because of its delicate flowers, but it is difficult to make it bloom on flat land. The flower stalk is 5-15 cm tall. It usually has four bracts. The basal leaves usually have two, are 7-20 cm long and about 1 mm wide. There is a cylindrical bulb underground. The flowers bloom in July, and the petals are white with purple stripes on the outside. The fruit is a capsule, 8-9 mm long. It has three lobes, each of which usually contains six reddish-brown seeds. It is widely distributed in cold regions and high mountains in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan it is found from the central to northern parts.
