Kansai International Airport

Kansai International Airport

It is an international hub airport that spans Izumisano City, Sennan County, and Sennan City in Osaka Prefecture. It is one of the company-managed airports. It is also called Kansai Airport or Kanku. It has a total area of about 10.55 million square meters, and has two runways of 3,500 meters and 4,000 meters on two airport islands (2016). It is operated by the private company Kansai Airports Co., Ltd., and the land and facilities are owned and managed by the special company New Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd. In 2015, the number of takeoffs and landings per year was about 164,000, the number of passengers per year was about 23.21 million, and the amount of cargo handled per year was about 719,000 tons. Transportation to Kansai International Airport is available via expressways as well as railways (JR West Japan and Nankai Electric Railway), and it can be reached by train in about 30 minutes from the center of Osaka Prefecture.

Kansai International Airport was established about 5km off the coast of Senshu, Osaka Bay, to replace Osaka International Airport (Itami Airport), which had noise problems and reached its capacity limit due to its location. The establishment of the airport was approved by the local government in 1983, and the following year, in 1984, Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd., a public-private joint venture, was established and full-scale operations began. It is an international airport that can operate 24 hours a day, and its economic impact on other airports is not small. It is also the first airport in Japan to allow foreign companies to participate in its planning, and the basic design of the airport passenger terminal was based on a proposal by Renzo Piano of Italy. It was scheduled to open in 1992, but due to delays in negotiations for compensation for fishermen, an increase in the reclaimed land area, strengthening measures against subsidence due to softer ground than expected, and complex terminal building construction, the construction period was delayed by about two years, and it finally opened on September 4, 1994. The cost of the project also increased significantly, from the initial 820 billion yen for the first phase to 1,458 billion yen due to the addition of additional construction work and rising interest burdens. With the completion of the airport, all international flights departing from and arriving at Osaka International Airport were transferred to this airport.

In July 2012, Kansai International Airport merged with Osaka International Airport, and New Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd., which was established in the same year, began managing and operating both airports. A concession (sale of business operating rights) was then carried out, and the airports have been operated by Kansai Airports since April 2016.
