German poet. Born in Kiel. Hoping to become a soldier, he crossed the border to join the Prussian army as his hometown was in Danish territory at the time, and was wounded on the battlefield. After leaving the army he went to North America, but returned to Japan in disappointment. After working as a civil servant he began writing poetry on the side, and after 1890 he became a full-time writer. At first he was looked down upon as a side hustle for a veteran, but his style of poetry, which depicted war scenes and the scenery of North Germany in a detached, visually stunning way in poems such as the collection The Lieutenant's Ride (1883), attracted attention from some. He is now seen as a representative of Impressionism, but he also produced many excellent works of folk-song-like poetry that made use of his musical sensibility and added a touch of humor.

ドイツの詩人。キールに生まれる。軍人を志望し，故郷が当時デンマーク領だったため，越境してプロイセン軍に投じ，戦地で負傷。退役後北アメリカに渡るが，失意の帰国。官吏になるかたわら詩作を始め，90年以後著述が専業となる。はじめは退役軍人の余技と見くびられたが，詩集《副官騎行》(1883)などで戦争場面や北ドイツの風物を映像的なとらえ方で突き放して描く詩風が一部で注目された。今では印象主義の代表者と見られているが，音楽的感覚を生かしユーモアをきかせた民謡風の詩にも佳作が多い。
