1844‐1909 German poet. Born in Kiel. Hoping to become a soldier, he crossed the border to join the Prussian army as his hometown was in Danish territory at the time, and was wounded on the battlefield. After leaving the army he went to North America, but returned to Japan in disappointment. After working as a civil servant he began writing poetry on the side, and after 1890 he became a full-time writer. At first he was looked down upon as a side hustle for a veteran, but his style of poetry, which depicted war scenes and the scenery of North Germany in a detached, visually stunning way in poems such as the collection The Lieutenant's Ride (1883), attracted attention from some. He is now seen as a representative of Impressionism, but he also produced many excellent works of folk-song-like poetry that made use of his musical sensibility and added a touch of humor.
