Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Ryokunoukin

Japanese:
Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Ryokunoukin

A bacterium of the genus Pseudomonas in the family Pseudomonadaceae. Its name comes from the fact that green pus comes out when this bacterium causes a suppurative disease. It is a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium, measuring 0.5-1.0 x 1.5-5.0 micrometers (1 micrometer is one millionth of a meter), and forms one or several flagella at one end. It does not form spores, is aerobic, and is oxidase positive. It grows well on nutrient agar (a general culture medium for bacteria) at 37°C. Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces water-soluble pigments, which color the medium. The colors vary from blue-green, reddish purple, brown, and fluorescent. Some bacteria do not produce pigments. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium that is widely found in nature, but because it has low pathogenicity, it does not cause primary infections in healthy humans. However, once infection with this bacterium occurs, the condition can become serious because there are few effective treatments.
