A town in Higashiibaraki County, central Ibaraki Prefecture. It occupies the central Hitachi Plateau, with Lake Hinuma in the east. Urban areas have developed in Kozuru and Okunoya along the Mito Kaido (National Route 6). The town is involved in diversified farming of rice, horticulture, sericulture, and fruit cultivation, as well as the manufacture of metals and transport equipment. 茨城県中部，東茨城郡の町。常陸(ひたち)台地中部を占め，東部に涸沼(ひぬま)がある。水戸街道（国道６号線）沿いの小鶴，奥谷(おくのや)に市街が発達。米作，園芸，養蚕，果樹栽培の多角経営，金属，輸送機などの製造が行われる。東日本大震災で，町内において被害が発生。121.58km2。３万4513人（2010）。
