Japanese: 宇宙樹 - うちゅうじゅ（英語表記）cosmic tree

Also called the world tree. A giant tree believed to stand between the heavens and the underworld and to embody the order of the entire universe. It appears in myths from all over the world, and the most famous is the "Yggdrasil" (a giant ash tree meaning "Odin's horse") in the ancient Nordic mythology of the Edda. Its branches spread over the entire world and reach up into the heavens, and its three roots reach the land of the gods, the land of the giants, and the land of the dead. In addition, the cosmic tree has a wide variety of representations and meanings in the Upanishad philosophy of ancient India, Aztec mythology, and the shamanistic beliefs of Siberian peoples.

世界樹 world treeともいう。天界と地下界とを貫くようにそびえ，全世界 (宇宙) の秩序を体現していると信じられる巨木。世界各地の神話にみられ，ことに北欧の古代神話『エッダ』のなかの「イグドラシル」 (「オーディン神の馬」という意味のトネリコの巨木) が有名で，その枝は全世界の上に広がり，天の上まで突き出ており，3本の根はそれぞれ神々の国・巨人の国・死者の国へと伸びている。そのほか，古代インドのウパニシャッド哲学，アステカの神話，シベリア諸民族のシャーマニズム信仰などにおいて，宇宙樹は多種多様な表象と意味をもつ。
