Chuuyuuki

Japanese:
Chuuyuuki

This is the diary of Fujiwara Munetada (1062-1141), a nobleman in the late Heian period. Its original title was Gurin. The diary is called Chuu-u-ki because Munetada, the writer, lived in the Nakamikado Tominokoji residence in Kyoto and was called Nakamikado Ufu after he was promoted to the position of Minister of the Right. He began writing on New Year's Day in 1087 (Otoku 4) at the age of 26, during the start of the Shirakawa Insei period, and continued to write for 52 years until he became a monk and received the ordination on February 29, 1138 (Hōen 4) during the Toba Insei period, at the age of 77. It is a vast and detailed record estimated to be over 200 volumes in its entirety, and several hundred volumes have been handed down to the present day, and is included in the seven volumes of the Augmented Historical Materials Collection (Rinsen Shoten). The writer, Munetada, was well-versed in court ceremonies and government affairs, and held various prominent positions such as benkan (official adviser) and nagon (councillor) before rising to the position of minister. As such, the contents of the diary are a model noble diary, providing detailed accounts of his official affairs to be of use to future generations. However, it also contains many first-class historical documents providing insight into the period, such as incidents during the Insei period, the activities of the Innocent and his close aides, warriors of the Genpei coalition, and monks from Nanto and Hokuriku, social conditions such as the Daidengaku festival and pilgrimages to Kumano, the reality of investigations by Kebiishi (police officers), the popularity of building temples and Buddha statues, and the private lives of aristocratic households.
