Jiao-ran (English spelling)

Japanese: 皎然 - こうねん（英語表記）Jiao-ran

A Chinese poet-monk from the middle Tang Dynasty. Born in Changcheng (Zhejiang Province). His real name was Xie Dayu, and he was a descendant of Xie Lingyun. His literary name was Qing Dayu. He was said to have been devoted to both Buddhism and poetry, and to have also been well versed in the study of classics and history. He was friends with Yan Zhenqing, and assisted Yan in writing "Ryun Hai Jing Yuan." He was also influenced in poetry by Wei Yingwu, with whom he was also friends. He wrote "Shishi," which describes the style of poetry. His collection of poems is "Zhu Shan Shu."

中国，中唐の詩僧。長城 (浙江省) の人。本名は謝昼で，謝霊運の子孫。字，清昼。仏道，詩作ともに精進し，また経史の学にも通じていたといわれる。顔真卿と親交があり，その著の『韻海鏡源』に助力し，また詩では，やはり交遊のあった韋応物から影響を受けた。作詩の体式を述べた『詩式』の著がある。詩集『杼山集』。
