1754‐1836 French philosopher. He served as an army colonel, a member of the Estates General, a member of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Directory, and a senator in the Consulate. After the fall of Napoleon, he became a member of the Academic Academy. During the Restoration, he regained his title of count. He advocated a philosophy whose sole task was to study and explain the formation of ideas, and gave this the name of idealism. In his major work, Principles of Idealism (1801-15), while inheriting Condillac's theory of sensation, he emphasized that the movement of the subject is essential for the perception of the external world to be established.
