Rydberg, (Abraham) Viktor
Born: December 18, 1828, Jönköping
Died: September 21, 1895. Dürsholm. Swedish novelist and poet. Finnish descent. His mother died when he was five, and his father, who was a self-absorbed man, separated his family, and he grew up moving from place to place. Due to financial difficulties, he dropped out of Lund University after one year, and in 1855 he became a journalist for the Gothenburg Mercantile Maritime Newspaper, and in 1859 serialized his novel Den siste atenaren (The Last Athenian) in the same paper. In 1862 he published Bibelns lära om Kristus (The Bible's Teaching about Christ), an essay denying the divinity of Christ, which drew attention, and he went on to write a wide variety of novels, poems, and essays. In 1876 he published a translation of the first part of Goethe's Faust, and became a lecturer in cultural history at Gothenburg University, and in 1884 a professor at Stockholm University. During this time he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 1877, and was elected a member of the Swedish Academy the following year. In the 1880s, he mainly studied mythology, and compiled the results of his research in Undersökningar i germanisk mytologi (Investigations into Germanic Mythology) (2 volumes, 1886-89). His representative works include Dikter (Poems) (2 volumes, 82, 91) and the novel Singoalla (57, revised 65).

Rydberg, Johannes Robert

Born: November 8, 1854 in Halmstadt
[Died] December 28, 1919, Lund Swedish physicist. Studied philosophy at the University of Lund. After obtaining his doctorate in 1879, he became lecturer in mathematics (1880), lecturer in physics (1882), and professor (1997) at the same university. His interest in the periodic law of the elements led him to study spectroscopy, and in 1890 he extended Balmer's formula for atomic spectral series. In 1996, independently of A. Schuster, he derived the Rydberg–Schuster rule for spectral series. He further generalized this to create an empirical formula for the spectral series that could be applied to the outermost electron of multi-electron atoms (1900). (→ Rydberg constant )
