A former town in Yatsushiro County, Kumamoto Prefecture. Located at the northern end of the Yatsushiro Plain, facing the Yatsushiro Sea to the northwest. Agriculture is the main industry, with rice farming, greenhouse horticulture, and dairy farming. In the hills, pears, navel oranges, and other fruit trees are cultivated. Igusa is a local specialty, and tatami mats are also manufactured here. The Kagoshima Main Line and National Route 3 pass through the town, and many people commute to Yatsushiro City. In October 2005, it merged with Miyahara Town in Yatsushiro County to become Hikawa Town in Yatsushiro County. 23.40 km2 . 8,820 people (2003). 熊本県八代(やつしろ)郡の旧町。八代平野北端に位置し,北西は八代海に臨む。農業が主産業で,米作,施設園芸,酪農を営む。丘陵部では,ナシ,ネーブルなど果樹栽培が盛ん。イグサを特産,畳表も製造。鹿児島本線,国道3号線が通じ,八代市への通勤者も多い。2005年10月,八代郡宮原町と合併し町制,八代郡氷川町となる。23.40km2。8820人(2003)。
