Bishop's seat - cathedra

Japanese: 司教座 - しきょうざ（英語表記）cathedra

The chair of the bishop in a cathedral. In early Christian times, it was placed at the head of the apse behind the altar, but from the Carolingian period onwards it came to be placed in front of the altar on the Gospel side of the altar (to the left of the entrance). In the Early Middle Ages, it was often richly decorated with carvings, such as the ivory work known as the Chair of Maximian (mid-6th century, Ravenna Archbishop's Museum).

大聖堂内にある司教の椅子 (カテドラ) 。初期キリスト教時代には，祭壇背後のアプスの頭部に据えられていたが，カロリング朝時代以後は祭壇前の祭壇福音書側 (入口より向って左側) に据えられるようになった。中世初期においては，たとえば『マクシミアヌスの司教座』として知られる象牙の作品 (6世紀中頃，ラベンナ大司教美術館) のように，しばしば豊富な彫刻装飾が施された。
