Libreville - Libreville (English spelling)

Libreville - Libreville (English spelling)

The capital of Gabon, in central Africa. It is located in the northwest of the country, on the right bank of the mouth of the Gabon River on the Gulf of Guinea. It is the political, economic and cultural center of Gabon, and is also a port city on a par with Port Gentil in the south. A new port capable of handling ocean-going ships was built at Owendo, 13 kilometers inland, and functions as the Libreville-Owendo Port. The city's name means "free city," and it was built around 1840-50 with the aim of providing a free society for freed black slaves. It subsequently became the commercial center of the Gabon region, and in the second half of the 19th century, tobacco, raw rubber, ebony, okoume wood, ivory and other products were exported. However, today's development was achieved after independence, and the population, which was 8,800 in 1950 before independence, grew to 56,000 in 1967 after independence, and subsequently to 523,000 (1999 estimate), with the urban population at 703,939 (2013 census).
