A shrub of the Euphorbiaceae family. It grows to a height of 2m, with many thin twigs and bushy growth. The leaves are egg-shaped, lanceolate, and pointed, with a glossy green upper surface and a vivid purple-red underside, creating a beautiful contrast. The flowers are small and inconspicuous. It has long been a well-known ornamental plant, and should be kept above 10°C in winter. In summer, it is best to place it in the shade to prevent sunburn. It should be planted in fertile soil with good drainage, and propagated by cutting the tips of branches 5-10cm long in June-July. トウダイグサ科の低木。高さは2mに達し,細い小枝を多数出し,こんもり茂る。葉は卵状披針形で先がとがり,葉の表は光沢ある緑色,裏は鮮やかな紫紅色で,その対照が美しい。花は小さく目だたない。古くから知られる観葉植物で,冬は10℃以上で管理する。夏の間は日焼けを防ぐため,日陰に置くのがよい。排水のよい肥えた土に植え,繁殖は6~7月に枝先を長さ5~10cmに切って挿す。 セイシボク属Excoecariaは旧世界熱帯域に約25種ある。
