Liedform - Liedform (English spelling) German

A musical form in Western music. Lied is a German word meaning song, but the term Lied form is usually used in instrumental music to mean a simple, clear form like that found in songs. Specifically, it refers to simple duo and ternary forms and their variations. Each section is formed by stacking units of two bars, with two parallel two-bar motifs making four bars, and two more of these making eight bars, and so on, with paragraphs at even-numbered bars here and there. A duo form is a series of two such small units, and between the two small units there can be three types of forms: repetition (A-A), contrast (A-B), and variation (A-A'). In ternary form, A-B-A or A-B-A' is the most common form, but A-A-B, A-B-B, A-B-C, etc. are also possible. There are many more variations that can be enlarged and extended from these forms.

三部形式ではA―B―AないしA―B―A′という形がもっとも一般的だが、A―A―BやA―B―B、A―B―Cなどもありうる。こうした形式の拡大、延長として、なおさまざまの変種をあげることができる。
