...The stage is two bays wide with a single floor beam in the middle, but in reality it is just over 17 shaku (about 5.1 m) wide and 19 shaku (about 5.7 m) deep, which is close to the dimensions of three bays square, and is actually deeper than it is wide. The attoza (rear seat) is also just over 10 shaku (about 3 m) deep, with the floorboards stretching vertically from the stage to the attoza. The jiutaiza (chambered singing seat) is thought to have been added later, due to the unnatural positioning of the eaves and pillars....
