Akama

A district in the eastern part of Munakata City in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. Formerly known as Akama Town. In 1954 (Showa 29), it merged with neighboring towns and villages to become Munakata Town (established as a city in 1981). Since ancient times, major roads such as the Kagoshima Kaido passed through the area, and during the Edo period, it was a junction between the road leading from Koyanose (Kitakyushu City) to Hakozaki (Fukuoka City) and the road to Ashiya (Onga County), and flourished as one of the 21 post towns in Chikuzen. It declined after the Meiji period, but in recent years it has become a residential area and is home to many educational facilities, including Fukuoka University of Education.

福岡県北部、宗像市(むなかたし)東部の一地区。旧赤間町。1954年（昭和29）近隣の町村と合併し、宗像町（1981年市制施行）となる。古来、鹿児島街道など主要道路が通過、江戸時代には木屋瀬(こやのせ)（北九州市）から、箱崎(はこざき)（福岡市）に通じる街道と、芦屋(あしや)（遠賀(おんが)郡）への街道の分岐点にあたり、筑前二十一宿(ちくぜんにじゅういちしゅく)の一つとして栄えた。明治以降衰退したが、近年は住宅地域となり、福岡教育大学など教育施設が多い。
