In amphibian larvae, cyclostomes, and fish, the tactile organs are lined up from the head to the tail on both sides of the body. In fish, they are located within the lateral line canal on the surface of the skin and communicate with the outside world through canaliculi in the scales. The row of scales with these canaliculi is called the lateral line in appearance. The receptors are called neuromasts and have a structure similar to the hearing and balance organs in the inner ear of higher animals. They sense the pressure of the water flow and know the direction and speed of the flow. → Related topics Fish Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
