Lateral line organ

In amphibian larvae, cyclostomes, and fish, the tactile organs are lined up from the head to the tail on both sides of the body. In fish, they are located within the lateral line canal on the surface of the skin and communicate with the outside world through canaliculi in the scales. The row of scales with these canaliculi is called the lateral line in appearance. The receptors are called neuromasts and have a structure similar to the hearing and balance organs in the inner ear of higher animals. They sense the pressure of the water flow and know the direction and speed of the flow.

両生類の幼生および円口類，魚類の体の両側の頭部から尾部にわたって並ぶ触覚器官。魚類では皮膚表面の側線管内にあり，鱗の小管を通じて外部と連絡。この小管をもつ鱗の列は外観上，側線と呼ばれる。受容器は感丘と呼ばれ，高等動物の内耳の聴器や平衡器官に類似の構造をもつ。水流の圧力を感受し，流れの方向と速力を知る。
