Chronological order - Hennentai

A chronicle is a record of the development of historical events and the achievements of people over time, and is the most traditional and universal form of historical narrative. Its origins are ancient in China, and include the Spring and Autumn Annals, said to be the work of Confucius, its commentary, the Zuo Zhuan, as well as the Former Han Records and the Later Han Records. After the Records of the Grand Historian, official histories were written in the annals-biography style, but the annals (annals, imperial records) were also written in chronological order. The Zizhi Tongjian (294 volumes) compiled by Sima Guang in the Northern Song Dynasty is the most excellent chronological history, covering events from the Zhou dynasty to the end of the Five Dynasties. Subsequent chronological histories include the Continued Zizhi Tongjian Long Edition (60 volumes) compiled by Li Tao of the Southern Song Dynasty and the Second Part of the Zizhi Tongjian Edition (184 volumes) compiled by Xu Qianxue and others of the Qing Dynasty.

史実の展開や人物の事績を時を追って記す年代記であり、歴史叙述の形式としてはもっとも伝統的、かつ普遍的なもの。中国でも起源が古く、孔子(こうし)の著作といわれる『春秋(しゅんじゅう)』、その注釈書の一つ『春秋左氏伝(さしでん)』、また『前漢紀(ぜんかんき)』『後漢紀(ごかんき)』などがある。『史記(しき)』以後、正史は紀伝体(きでんたい)で記されることになったが、紀（本紀(ほんぎ)、帝紀(ていき)）もまた編年体である。北宋(ほくそう)の司馬光撰(しばこうせん)『資治通鑑(しじつがん)』（294巻）はもっとも優れた編年史であり、周代から五代(ごだい)末までのことを記す。このあとを続けた編年史としては、南宋の李燾(りとう)撰『続(ぞく)資治通鑑長編(ちょうへん)』（60巻）、清(しん)の徐乾学(じょけんがく)ら撰『資治通鑑後編』（184巻）などがある。
