Mining disease - Kozanbyo

Japanese: 鉱山病 - こうざんびょう

Historical name for various diseases suffered by miners. Mining and metallurgy are said to be the first specialized trades of mankind, but they were also the first places where humans produced harmful substances, and mines were the origin of occupational and pollution-related diseases. The ancient Greeks had already observed toxic gases and mercury poisoning in silver mines, but mining diseases were not clearly recognized until the emergence of the mining industry in Europe, which heralded the dawn of modern civilization. The first Europeans to leave medical records of mining diseases were G. Agricola and Paracelsus during the Renaissance.

鉱山労働者がかかる種々の病気の歴史的呼称。採鉱･冶金は人類最初の専門業であるといわれるが，それはまた人間が初めて有害物質をつくり出した現場でもあり，鉱山は職業病･公害病の原点であった。古代ギリシア人はすでに銀山における有毒ガスや水銀中毒について観察していたが，鉱山病がはっきりと認識されるのは，ヨーロッパで近代文明の夜明けを告げる鉱山業が勃興した時点であった。ヨーロッパで初めて鉱山病について医学的な記録を残したのは，ルネサンス時代のG.アグリコラとパラケルススである。
