Al-Lādhiqīyah in Arabic. Capital of the prefecture of the same name in northwestern Syria. Port city on Cape Jara jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea. Syria's main port, with rich agricultural land behind it, is a trading center for olives, tobacco, and grains, and exports these agricultural products, as well as vegetable oil, asphalt, and pottery. Spinning, vegetable oil production, and sponge collection and processing are the main industries. Connected by road to Aleppo, Tripoli, and Beirut. There are ruins from the Phoenician period, and the name comes from Laodeikeia, named after the mother of Seleucus I in the 4th century BC. Due to frequent earthquakes, the only ancient structures that remain are a Roman triumphal arch and a Corinthian colonnade of the Temple of Bacchus. Population 284,000 (1992 estimate).
