A major French department store with its main store in Paris. Founded in Paris in 1852 by Aristide Boucicaut (1810-77), it is said to be the origin of the modern department store in the history of world commerce. Its innovations were: (1) allowing anyone to enter the store, (2) setting fixed prices for merchandise and selling them to everyone at the same price, (3) displaying a large number of products so that customers could look at them and touch them, (4) allowing the return of products, and (5) keeping prices low and increasing the turnover of merchandise.
