In China, from the Northern Dynasty (→Northern and Southern Dynasties) to the Sui and Tang dynasties, this was the name of the official who managed the Zoroastrian shrines and believers who came from the west. They were people of Hu, such as the Sogdians. It is thought to be a Chinese transliteration of an Indo-Iranian word meaning caravan leader, and is also written as Safu or Saho.
