A passerine bird of the flycatcher family. The male has a very long tail and is 45 to 50 cm long. The head and chest are purple-black, the back is purple-reddish brown, and the belly is white. The crest is short but prominent, and the cobalt blue eyelids are exposed around the eyes. The beak is gray-blue. The female does not have a long tail like the male, and is about 18 cm long. The feathers are somewhat mottled overall. They breed from the Babuyan Islands in the Philippines to the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan, and migrate to southern China, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, the Philippines, and other places in autumn and winter.

スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥。雄は尾が非常に長く，全長45～50cm。頭部と胸は紫黒色で，背は紫がかった赤褐色，腹部は白い。冠羽は短いがよく目だち，眼のまわりにはコバルトブルーのまぶたが裸出している。くちばしは灰青色。雌は雄のように尾が長くなく，全長約18cm。羽色も全体にいくらかじみである。フィリピンのバブヤン諸島から琉球諸島，日本本土にかけて繁殖し，秋･冬季には中国南部，マレー半島，スマトラ，フィリピンなどに渡る。
