French naturalist. Born in Paris, he served in the military, but from 1730 he devoted himself to research in mathematics and natural sciences. He participated in a survey team set up by the Académie des Sciences in Paris to measure the length of meridians around the equator, and from 1736 to 1744 he conducted research in the Quito area of South America. In 1744 he traveled down the Amazon River to its mouth in Pará (now Belém), where he conducted academic research on the basin, including the arrow poison curare and the seasonal flooding phenomenon of the Pororoca. After returning home in 1745, he published a report on his findings, A Journey Through the Interior of South America.

フランスの博物学者。パリに生まれ，軍人生活を送っていたが，1730年以降は数学，自然科学の研究に従事した。パリのアカデミー･デ･シアンスの赤道周辺の子午線長の計測調査隊に参加し，36年から44年まで南アメリカのキト一帯で調査をした。44年アマゾン川を河口のパラ(現，ベレン)まで下り，矢毒クラーレ，季節的出水のポロロカ現象など流域の学術調査を行い，帰国後の45年にその報告書《南アメリカ内陸調査旅行記》を著した。
