1701‐74 French naturalist. Born in Paris, he served in the military, but from 1730 he devoted himself to research in mathematics and natural sciences. He participated in a survey team set up by the Académie des Sciences in Paris to measure the length of meridians around the equator, and from 1736 to 1744 he conducted research in the Quito area of South America. In 1744 he traveled down the Amazon River to its mouth in Pará (now Belém), where he conducted academic research on the basin, including the arrow poison curare and the seasonal flooding phenomenon of the Pororoca. After returning home in 1745, he published a report on his findings, A Journey Through the Interior of South America. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
