An ancient city in the northwestern tip of Boeotia, central Greece. Located on a strategic location on the route from northern Greece, it is known as the site of important battles in ancient times. In 338 BC, Philip II of Macedonia defeated the combined forces of Athens and Thebes (Battle of Chaeronea). A lion statue commemorating Philip II's victory still stands there today. In 86 BC, Sulla of Rome won a decisive victory over the army of a subordinate of Mithridates VI. It is also known as the birthplace of Plutarch.
