Chaeroneia - English spelling: Chaironeia

An ancient city in the northwestern tip of Boeotia, central Greece. Located on a strategic location on the route from northern Greece, it is known as the site of important battles in ancient times. In 338 BC, Philip II of Macedonia defeated the combined forces of Athens and Thebes (Battle of Chaeronea). A lion statue commemorating Philip II's victory still stands there today. In 86 BC, Sulla of Rome won a decisive victory over the army of a subordinate of Mithridates VI. It is also known as the birthplace of Plutarch.

中部ギリシア、ボイオティア地方北西端の古代都市。北ギリシアからの交通路の要地にあたり、古代の重要な合戦の場として知られる。紀元前338年にはマケドニアのフィリッポス2世がアテネ・テーベ連合軍を破った（カイロネイアの戦い）。フィリッポス2世の戦勝記念の獅子(しし)像が今日も立っている。前86年にはローマのスラがミトリダテス6世の部将の軍隊に対し決定的勝利をあげた。プルタルコスの出生地としても知られる。
