Gangwon Province
This province occupies the central part of the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The area north of the armistice line belongs to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the area south belongs to the Republic of Korea. There are seven cities and 11 counties in the south, with the capital being Chuncheon, and one city and 16 counties in the north, with the capital being Wonsan. Most of the province is mountainous, with the Taebaek Mountains running north and south along the east coast, and high peaks over 1,500m above sea level, such as Mount Kumgang, Mount Seorak, and Mount Taebaek. The eastern side is a subsiding coast with a sedimentary plain of small rivers, and the western side is a lava plateau with a gentle slope. The Han River and its tributaries, the Chuncheon River, the Soyang River, and the Hong River, flow westward, forming basins in various places. The northern part has little arable land and few agricultural products. It is rich in underground resources, producing coal, lead, zinc, limestone, nickel, etc., and industrial sites include the Munpyeong Smelter, the vehicle and shipbuilding plant in Wonsan, and the cement plant in Cheonnae-ri. In the south, only 10% of the land is cultivated, and forestry and livestock farming are thriving. Corn, soybeans, rice, wheat, etc. are produced. Subterranean resources include tungsten, limestone, zinc, and lead, and anthracite from Samcheok, Taebaek, and Yeongwol is famous. Comprehensive industrial development is being carried out, centering on Samcheok and Donghae. The north has an area of ​​11,152 km2 and a population of 1,478,000 (2008). The south has a population of 16,502 km2 and a population of 1,465,000 (2005).
